Google's Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, CEO Sundar Pichai announced Tuesday, cementing it as the company's fastest-growing product ever and the 14th Google service to hit the billion-user milestone. The growth has been rapid: Gemini reported 400 million monthly users in May 2025, then roughly 900 million by mid-2026, according to TechCrunch.

The milestone puts Gemini roughly on pace with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which crossed 1 billion monthly active users back in June, intensifying the head-to-head battle between the two companies for everyday AI users. Google says the figure counts only the standalone Gemini app and doesn't include the far larger number of people who interact with Gemini models embedded across Search, Workspace and Android.

VOICE MODE AND IMAGE GENERATION DRIVE GROWTH

In a post celebrating the milestone, Google's official account shared usage data showing 63% of Gemini users now talk to the assistant using its voice feature, and the app generates more than 150 million images daily. The company credited aggressive feature rollouts and default integration across Android devices for accelerating adoption over the past year.

The announcement lands the same week markets are digesting a fresh wave of tech earnings, with investors watching to see whether Google can convert Gemini's user growth into meaningful ad and cloud revenue gains. Alphabet has poured tens of billions of dollars into AI infrastructure this year, betting that scale in consumer AI will translate into a durable edge over rivals.

Google has not disclosed a specific timeline for its next growth target, but executives have signaled that deeper integration with Search and Workspace will remain the primary growth lever heading into the fall.
