Jonathan Taylor Thomas, the actor best known for playing Randy Taylor on "Home Improvement," was arrested early Monday in Westlake Village, California, after deputies say he interfered with a DUI stop and kicked a sheriff's deputy, according to TODAY.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies noticed a car stopped at a green light at the intersection of Westlake Boulevard and Townsgate Road and pulled it over on suspicion the driver was intoxicated. Thomas, now 45, was a passenger in the vehicle. As deputies conducted field sobriety tests on the driver, Thomas "kept disrupting" the process, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

From disruption to arrest

When deputies moved to detain Thomas for obstruction and public intoxication, he allegedly kicked one of them in the stomach, per NBC Los Angeles. He was then arrested and taken to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station, where jail records show he was booked at 1:50 a.m. on felony charges tied to the altercation. Thomas was released the following day, September 22, at around 12 p.m.

Thomas rose to fame as a child actor in the 1990s, playing the middle Taylor son on the long-running sitcom "Home Improvement" opposite Tim Allen, and later voiced young Simba in Disney's animated "The Lion King" and starred in "The Adventures of Pinocchio." He largely stepped back from acting as an adult, making only occasional television appearances in the years since.

It's not yet clear what charges, if any, the original driver is facing from the DUI investigation that prompted the stop, or whether Thomas has retained an attorney. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has not released additional details beyond the initial booking information.
