Sovereignty closed with a furious late run to win the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday, denying Forever Young's bid to become just the second horse in the race's history to win it twice.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott and ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty rallied through the stretch to win by 1 3/4 lengths, paying $5.94 on a $2 bet, according to USRacing.com's official results and payouts. The Puma and Knightsbridge rounded out the top three, while defending champion Forever Young — attempting to join Tiznow (2000-'01) as the only repeat Classic winner — faded to fifth, per the NBC Sports results tracker.

The win capped a career that had already included victories in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Sovereignty was forced to skip last year's Classic after spiking a fever days before the race, and this season he added the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga before Saturday's triumph.

A record field, a thinned-out race

Saturday marked the first time Keeneland has hosted the Breeders' Cup, and the build-up had been enormous: a record 255 horses were pre-entered across the two-day World Championships, with the Classic itself limited to a 14-horse field led by Forever Young and Sovereignty. By post time, scratches had trimmed the field further — among them Magnitude, who was scratched on race day, according to UPI's race recap.

T O Password finished fourth. The result was a significant upset for bettors who had made Forever Young's repeat bid a centerpiece storyline of the entire meet, after he entered on a win streak that included last year's Classic.

SOVEREIGNTY RALLIES LATE TO DENY FOREVER YOUNG'S BID FOR BACK-TO-BACK CLASSIC WINS

Mott's victory is the latest in a Hall of Fame career built on patience with top-tier horses, and it continues a strong fall for Sovereignty's connections, who have treated this season as validation after the fever scratch cost them a shot at the 2025 Classic field. Full finish order and payout breakdowns were published by the DraftKings Network's race-by-race coverage.

Saturday's card was the headline event of the two-day World Championships, which Keeneland had spent years lobbying to host and used to showcase the Lexington track's dirt and turf configurations to an international television audience for the first time.

What's next

Sovereignty's connections have not announced plans for 2027, though a horse of his caliber figures to be pointed toward another run at Saratoga's summer stakes schedule long before any title defense is discussed. Forever Young's team, meanwhile, will have to regroup after a result that ends his bid for a place in Classic history alongside Tiznow.
