MABLETON, GA — One person died and four others were injured Monday afternoon after a rider fell from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, prompting the park's immediate evacuation and a company-wide safety review of sister coasters across the country.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. on the holiday Monday, according to CBS News Atlanta. Witnesses waiting in line for a nearby ride described seeing someone go over the side. "I just see somebody fly out and just fly into the woods," said witness Brittany Landry, who was in line for the Georgia Scorcher at the time, per Fox 5 Atlanta. Another guest, Deysi Gonzalez, relayed a similar account from a fellow rider: "somebody just fell off of the Goliath."

Police and fire crews swarmed the park, located in Mableton in Cobb County, and shut it down for the rest of the day. The park, in its off-season weekend schedule, isn't due to reopen until Friday, Oct. 16.

Six Flags Entertainment Corp. said it is "deeply saddened by the guest incident" and is "cooperating fully" with investigators, declining further detail "out of respect for the family's privacy," according to WSB-TV. No victim names have been released.

"A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY OCCURRED TODAY AT SIX FLAGS OVER GEORGIA."

Cobb County Commission Chair Lisa Cupid confirmed the death and injuries in a statement, calling it "a terrible tragedy," while Mableton Mayor Michael Owens said the community was "deeply saddened." Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King said state inspectors were on site "examining the equipment."

Sister coasters pulled nationwide

As a precaution, Six Flags temporarily shut down a string of similar Bolliger & Mabillard-built hypercoasters at parks across the country, including Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America, the Magic Mountain Goliath in California, Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure, Leviathan and Behemoth at Canada's Wonderland, Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds, and Orion and Diamondback at Kings Island.

Goliath opened at Six Flags Over Georgia in 2006, standing 200 feet tall with a 170-foot first drop and a top speed of 70 mph. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Monday's death is at least the seventh linked to the park over the years, including a 2006 Goliath incident later ruled an apparent heart attack.

Cobb County's Major Crimes Unit is investigating alongside state ride inspectors. Police have not officially confirmed how the fall occurred, and no cause has been announced.
