UMass Dartmouth Freshman Stabbed to Death After Nightclub Dispute Spills Into Providence Parking Lot
Marvins Antoine, 18, died hours after his team's season opener when an argument at a Providence nightclub turned deadly outside a nearby Wendy's. A fellow freshman was also stabbed and a suspect is jailed on a murder charge.
An 18-year-old UMass Dartmouth football player was stabbed to death early Saturday after a night out with teammates ended in violence outside a Providence, Rhode Island, fast-food restaurant, according to CBS News Boston.
Marvins Antoine, a freshman running back from Fall River and a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, was with other players at Mezzo Lounge in downtown Providence after the team's home loss to Framingham State earlier that night. Around midnight, police say an altercation broke out inside the club involving a woman and several people in line, then moved across the street into the parking lot of a Wendy's on Charles Street, where two players were stabbed.
Antoine suffered a stab wound to the chest and was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A teammate, 19-year-old freshman defensive back Kensley Macean, was stabbed in the head, neck and left arm and was hospitalized with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.
Suspect identified, no known connection to victims
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said investigators do not believe the attacker knew the players. "There was an altercation between a female and some of the victims that were in line," Perez said, which then "moved over to the parking lot." Officers used Flock camera license-plate technology to trace a vehicle to the suspect.
NO INDICATION THEY KNEW EACH OTHER — POLICE ON THE ATTACK
Chukuwnonoso Uzoma Eze, 19, a UMass Dartmouth student who was not a member of the football team, was arrested on campus and charged with murder. He is being held pending transfer to Rhode Island authorities, according to The Boston Globe.
UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller said the university's "hearts and prayers are very much with Marvins' family," adding "prayers and best wishes for Kensley's recovery." Counseling resources have been made available to students and the football team, per Boston 25 News.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges against Eze have not been ruled out as detectives continue to interview witnesses from the club and the parking lot.
