A gunman firing from a moving car tore through the Paris suburb of Trappes on Friday, killing one person and wounding at least five others in an attack French authorities are treating as terrorism. The shooter opened fire at a gas station, a medical center and a children's playground before being arrested a short distance away on the N10 highway.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned the rampage as France's first attack of its kind, saying investigators believe it targeted victims because of their actual or perceived race, ethnicity or religion. Paris prosecutors opened a murder investigation tied to a "terrorist enterprise," according to CBS News.

A Spree Across Two Towns

Witnesses described a car weaving through Trappes and the adjoining town of La Verrière as the gunman fired indiscriminately. Casualty figures shifted through the day: early reports cited four wounded, but the local mayor later said five people were hit, three of them critically. One of the most seriously hurt, per regional reporting, is a 12-year-old girl shot eight times who is listed in stable condition.

OBJECTIVELY RACIST, PROBABLY ISLAMOPHOBIC

That was how the Trappes mayor described the motive, echoing prosecutors' early assessment as they build the case, according to CNN's reporting from the scene.

French media identified the suspect as a 39-year-old man, named in reports as Kevin T., who was taken into custody on the N10 road not far from where the shooting began. A member of his immediate family was also detained for questioning, according to outlets cited by ABC News Australia.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive statement from the suspect himself, and the investigation into what preceded the attack is ongoing.

A Nation on Edge

The shooting lands in a France already jarred by weeks of unrest, including nights of youth riots in Milan-adjacent headlines and heavy security costs tied to recent unrest elsewhere in the country. Security has been tightened around medical centers and schools in the Yvelines region as investigators comb through surveillance footage and interview survivors.

Local officials have not ruled out additional charges as the case develops, and French anti-terrorism prosecutors are expected to take over the file formally in the coming days.

Do not confuse this attack with a separate, unrelated 2018 incident in Trappes in which a man killed two family members; authorities say that case had no terrorism finding.
