Harry Styles Debuts Secret, Unreleased Song for Liam Payne on Heartbreaking MSG Anniversary Night
Two years to the day after losing his One Direction bandmate, Harry Styles broke from his setlist to perform a never-before-heard ballad called "What Is Enough" for a stunned Madison Square Garden crowd.
Harry Styles turned Madison Square Garden into something between a concert and a wake on Friday night, pausing his ongoing "Together, Together" residency to debut a song that, by his own account, he'd been sitting on for two years.
The date was October 16 — exactly two years since his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne died after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires at age 31. Styles told the crowd he'd written something in Payne's memory not long after the singer's death, and had kept it to himself until that moment.
'It's Sad'
"I'm gonna play you a song that I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that's all right with you," Styles said, according to Rolling Stone's account of the show. He introduced the track simply: "This is 'What Is Enough.'"
"AND TWO YEARS AGO TODAY, I LOST ONE OF THOSE FRIENDS. IT'S SAD."
Styles' remark nodded to the four surviving members of One Direction — himself, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson — who formed the group with Payne on "The X Factor" in 2010 and called themselves "completely devastated" in a joint statement after his death. Variety reports the song has never been released in any form — as of this weekend there's still no studio version, no official lyrics, and no word on whether "What Is Enough" will ever land on an album.
Styles wasn't the only former bandmate marking the day. Just before the anniversary, Horan folded his own tribute to Payne into his "Dinner Party: Live On Tour" show in Birmingham, England, weaving a spoken tribute into his song "End of an Era."
Payne died in October 2024 after falling from the third-floor balcony of the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires, where he'd traveled to see Horan perform. Argentine authorities attributed his death to multiple traumas. The anniversary has become an annual moment of reckoning for the band that dominated pop charts for half a decade before splitting in 2016 — and for the members still processing the loss in very public ways.
For now, the lucky few thousand who heard "What Is Enough" inside the Garden may be the only people who've heard it at all. Styles gave no indication of when — or if — fans anywhere else might get the chance.
