New and troubling details are emerging about the final hours of Presley Gerber, the 27-year-old son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, who died of a suspected overdose after checking into a Los Angeles-area "sober living" home.

According to TMZ, a member of Gerber's own sober-support team called the facility, Resolutions Living, the afternoon before his death to warn staff he was "high" — and the home let him check in anyway. Gerber reportedly arrived shortly after 6 p.m. already under the influence, acting erratically and making troubling remarks about why he had used. He was pronounced dead roughly 12 hours later.

Compounding the concern: California's Department of Health Care Services has no record of Resolutions Living being a licensed substance-use treatment facility. As a "sober living environment," it isn't required to staff doctors, nurses or licensed therapists the way an accredited rehab clinic would. TMZ also reported that the facility's founder had previously been denied psychology registration by the state board over past drug-related arrests.

Gerber, who followed his mother into modeling, had spoken candidly in the past about his struggles with substance abuse and mental health. Police have said there is no indication of foul play; the Los Angeles County medical examiner has not yet released an official cause of death.

The revelations have reignited scrutiny of California's murky "sober living" industry, which operates with far less oversight than licensed rehab centers despite housing some of the most vulnerable patients in recovery.
