A truck drove into a crowd of children and parents at a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and sending ten other people to hospitals, police said.

The crash happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. at the city-owned Stryker Sports Complex, an 11-field turf facility in northeast Wichita, as families watched youth games in progress. Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, was driving the truck when it struck the crowd; she remained at the scene with two children who were in the vehicle with her and was taken into custody. Moses said she "has been cooperative up to this point in the investigation."

The boy and man who died were both from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related to each other, according to CBS News. Ten others were hurt — five children ages 5 to 9 and five adults ages 28 to 68 — with injuries police described as ranging from minor to severe but believed not to be life-threatening. Bystanders were already administering first aid when first responders from Kansas Highway Patrol, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office and Bel Aire police arrived.

Investigation ongoing

Police said it was not immediately clear whether the crash was intentional, and the investigation was continuing into Saturday night. Officers asked anyone with video of the incident to come forward. The city shut down all events at the sprawling complex "until further notice," and the Kansas State High School Activities Association postponed its flag football state championship, which was being held at the same site.

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu addressed the tragedy Saturday evening, noting families had gathered simply "to watch their children play soccer."

"My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved."

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly also offered condolences and said the state had made resources available to the city. Local crisis counselors were made available to grieving families overnight, and a vigil drew mourners in McPherson, the hometown of both people killed, according to KWCH.

No charges had been announced as of Saturday night. Police have not released the names of the victims or driver, and the motive for the crash remains under investigation.
