SNL Season 52 Opens With Dakota Johnson — But Grammy-Winning Hardcore Band Turnstile Steals the Night
Dakota Johnson pulled host duty for the third time as Saturday Night Live opened its 52nd season — but it was Baltimore hardcore act Turnstile, the first band of its kind on the show since Fear's notorious 1981 appearance, that had everyone talking by Sunday morning.
Saturday Night Live kicked off its 52nd season on Oct. 3 with Dakota Johnson pulling host duty for the third time — but the night's biggest talking point belonged to the musical guest. Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile made its first-ever appearance on the iconic NBC sketch show, becoming the first act from the genre to play the Studio 8H stage since punk outfit Fear's famously chaotic 1981 set.
Johnson, who first hosted in 2015 and returned again in early 2024, took the stage a day after her new film "Verity" arrived in theaters. For Turnstile, the booking capped a breakout year that saw the five-piece pick up its first two Grammy Awards in February — Best Rock Album for "Never Enough" and Best Metal Performance for "Birds."
A Baltimore Band's Biggest Stage
Formed in 2010, Turnstile — frontman Brendan Yates, guitarists Meg Mills and Pat McCrory, bassist Franz Lyon and drummer Daniel Fang — has spent over a decade pushing hardcore punk toward the mainstream, blending breakneck riffs with melodic, almost pop-leaning hooks. 2026 had already been a banner year for the band, including a European and UK tour and a remix collection featuring Elton John and Hayley Williams. According to Billboard's rundown of the episode, the band opened its SNL set with "Birds" before returning later in the show for a medley of "I Care" and "Dull."
The appearance briefly threatened a scheduling headache: Turnstile had been booked to play Oklahoma City the same night, forcing that concert to be pushed back to Oct. 5 so the band could make it to New York in time.
The booking is a departure for a show that has leaned heavily on pop, hip-hop and Latin pop acts for its musical slot in recent years — part of why SNL's season 52 musical guest lineup raised eyebrows when it was first announced last month. Turnstile's Oct. 3 slot sits alongside a run of high-profile season bookings: Shane Gillis hosts Oct. 10 with Rosalía performing, and Inde Navarrette makes her hosting debut on Halloween night with Gracie Abrams.
Clips from Turnstile's set were already circulating widely on social media by Sunday morning, with fans and music critics calling it a rare primetime showcase for hardcore punk — a genre that almost never gets stage time on a show built around three-minute pop sets.
Season 52 continues rolling out its host list in the weeks ahead. For Turnstile, the SNL stop is just one date on a victory lap that shows no signs of slowing — the band heads back on the road this week, starting with that rescheduled Oklahoma City show.
