NFL front offices are in full purge mode this week as all 32 teams race to trim their rosters from 90 players down to the regular-season limit of 53 before Sunday's deadline — a delayed cutdown day this year, pushed from the traditional Tuesday to Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. ET.

Leaguewide, roughly 1,184 players are expected to lose their roster spots before the weekend is out, according to a roundup of moves tracked by Here Rock Hill. Some of those players will land on other teams' practice squads or catch on elsewhere via waivers; many will simply be out of football, at least for now.

Notable Names Already Gone

Arizona waived 2024 third-round running back Trey Benson on Monday after two seasons cut short by injury, one of the more surprising cuts of the week given his draft pedigree. The Raiders parted ways with veteran wide receiver Noah Brown, while the Bengals released offensive tackle Cody Ford as Cincinnati's line takes shape for the season.

Elsewhere, Miami cut center Jim Bonifas and cornerback Ahmari Harvey, New England moved on from receiver Kobe Prentice and cornerback Kenneth Harris, and San Francisco trimmed three players at tight end and defensive end — Josiah Deguara, Tanner McLachlan and Titus Leo — as it reshapes its two-deep. Kansas City, Cleveland, Dallas and Philadelphia all made similar moves at receiver, tight end, nose tackle and safety, per the same tracking.

Not all of the roster shuffling is about outright cuts. Kansas City is acquiring offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu from the Giants in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round pick, a low-cost depth move as the Chiefs firm up their line. New England, meanwhile, finally pulled the trigger on a long-rumored trade of receiver Kayshon Boutte, clearing a roster spot and a bit of cap space in the process.

Not every subtraction is a straightforward release, either. Several players with injury designations were instead reverted to their teams' injured reserve lists rather than waived outright, preserving at least some path back for players who might otherwise have hit the open market.

What's Next

The real crunch comes this weekend, when rosters must hit 53 by Sunday evening. Teams will simultaneously be building 16-man practice squads from the newly available player pool, meaning many of this week's cuts could resurface on a different sideline within days. General managers will also keep working the phones for late trades before the regular season kicks off.
