A Fox Valley, Wisconsin cat named Erebus Anomaly just clawed his way into the record books with 29 toes — eight on one front paw and seven on each of the others — beating the previous 28-toe record that had stood since 2002.

Guinness World Records confirmed the polydactyl feline's title this week, delighting owners Kendra Vandenbloomer and Hunter Nett. The extra-digit trait, common in Maine Coons, is a naturally occurring genetic quirk rather than a health problem, and vets say polydactyl cats live entirely normal lives.

The new record edges out a Michigan kitten that had tied the old 28-toe mark back in June, keeping the crown for extra-toed cats firmly in the upper Midwest for now.
