The Detroit Pistons opened their season with a statement, beating the Boston Celtics 121-113 at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday night and spoiling Paul George's first regular-season appearance in a Celtics uniform.

The game was one of three marquee matchups the NBA lined up for its 2026-27 opening night, part of a nationally televised tripleheader that underscored just how much movement reshuffled the league's contenders over the offseason.

A Measuring-Stick Night

Detroit entered as the Eastern Conference's top seed from a year ago, while Boston brought in George as part of an offseason trade centered on Jaylen Brown, pairing him alongside Jayson Tatum in an effort to reload around the franchise's championship core. Coverage leading into the game framed it as an early measuring-stick test for both sides, with George's fit next to Tatum drawing much of the attention. Detroit instead delivered the first signature result of the new season, denying Boston's revamped roster a winning start.

GAME 8

Detroit's win was one piece of a busy night across the league. Earlier in the tripleheader, the New York Knicks hosted the Philadelphia 76ers as part of a banner-raising ceremony, with LeBron James making his regular-season debut for his new team. Later, the San Antonio Spurs hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder in a rematch billed by some as "Game 8" -- a nod to the Spurs' seven-game Western Conference Finals win over the Thunder last spring that sent San Antonio to its first NBA Finals in over a decade. That matchup pitted reigning Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama against back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, two of the league's biggest stars headlining what the league clearly designed as its signature opening-night draw.

What's Next

For Detroit and Boston, the opener is just the first data point in what both organizations hope is a long playoff run. Boston will look to smooth out George's integration over the season's early weeks, while the Pistons try to prove last year's top seed was no fluke. Both teams return to action within days as the 82-game grind gets underway in earnest.
