Cal Raleigh had never hit three home runs in a single game in his career — until Monday night, when he picked the worst possible opponent to do it against. The Seattle Mariners catcher went deep three times as Seattle blitzed the Philadelphia Phillies 9-2, snapping Philadelphia's season-best nine-game winning streak and sending Zack Wheeler to the dugout with the worst outing of his season.

Seattle wasted no time. Julio Rodriguez opened the first inning with a three-run homer off Wheeler, and Raleigh followed two batters later with a two-run shot of his own, part of a five-run first that had the Phillies reeling before most fans had found their seats. Philadelphia clawed back with a J.T. Realmuto homer in the second, but Raleigh wasn't finished. He and Cole Young went back-to-back in the fifth to chase Wheeler from the game, and he added a solo shot off reliever Chase Shugart in the seventh, pulling all three balls into the right-field seats from the left side of the plate.

The final line: 3-for-3 with a walk, three homers and five RBIs, according to the Associated Press recap. It was the 13th three-homer game in Mariners history and made Raleigh just the second catcher in franchise history to do it, joining current manager Dan Wilson, who hit three in a game back in April 1996. "I think there's no comparison," Wilson said afterward, according to MLB.com, when asked to measure his own feat against his catcher's.

A Rough Year, Redeemed for a Night

The eruption is notable because of how much Raleigh has struggled to produce it. Coming off a monster 2025 campaign, he entered Monday hitting just .159 on the season with a .304 slugging percentage — numbers nowhere close to the year before. The three-homer game pushed his home run total to 17 and nudged his average up to .167, but the underlying story is a middle-of-the-order bat that has had to fight for every swing that's landed.

"We've endured a lot this year, and we're fighting with everything we've got right now," Raleigh said after the win, per MLB.com. "This last month will say a lot about us as a group and us as a team. I think this is kind of where the boys are separated from the men."

Wheeler, typically among the most reliable arms in the league, took the loss after allowing a season-high eight runs on nine hits and five walks over four-plus innings, per the 6ABC/AP account of the game. Logan Gilbert got the win for Seattle, allowing just two runs across five innings.

The streak Philadelphia carried into T-Mobile Park was its best of the season, and a win would have pushed the Phillies to 10 straight as they try to hold off the rest of the National League East field. Instead, they left Seattle with their bid snapped in decisive fashion, outscored 9-2 in a game that got away from them in the first inning and never came back.

For Seattle, the win keeps the Mariners squarely in the American League playoff picture with roughly five weeks left in the regular season. Both clubs turn the page quickly: Philadelphia sends Aaron Nola to the mound Tuesday against Seattle's George Kirby, with the Phillies looking to regroup and the Mariners looking to prove Monday wasn't a one-night mirage.
