Val Chmerkovskiy's Deleted Oscars-Slap Jab at Carrie Ann Inaba Reignites DWTS Judges' Feud
The pro dancer posted, then deleted, a TikTok seemingly referencing Will Smith's 2022 Oscars slap after Inaba critiqued his partner's routine — and she wasn't about to let it slide.
A long-simmering tension between "Dancing with the Stars" pro Val Chmerkovskiy and judge Carrie Ann Inaba boiled over this week after Inaba's critique of his partnership with Harry Shum Jr. in the Oct. 13 episode. Inaba said she didn't feel there was enough substance in the pair's choreography and flagged what she called an illegal lift in the routine.
Chmerkovskiy's response came on social media rather than on the ballroom floor: a now-deleted TikTok Story that appeared to reference Will Smith's 2022 slap of Chris Rock at the Academy Awards, according to TV Insider's report on the exchange, which cited original reporting from The Hollywood Reporter. Inaba didn't let the post disappear quietly — she shared a screenshot of it herself, asking pointedly what was going on, before thanking outlets for flagging the moment publicly.
SHE WASN'T ABOUT TO LET A DELETED POST BE THE LAST WORD
The spat is the latest flare-up in a dynamic DWTS fans have tracked for years between Chmerkovskiy and the show's longtime panel, where critiques of his choreography choices have periodically drawn pointed responses from the dancer. Neither Chmerkovskiy nor Inaba has issued a full public statement beyond the social media posts themselves, and ABC has not commented.
The moment adds fresh drama to a season that's already seen four couples eliminated, with the competition resuming this week on ABC and Disney+, streaming the next day on Hulu.
