OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra this week, a new flagship model the company is billing as "the world's most intelligent and aligned" system it has ever shipped — and one senior executives say may mark the arrival of artificial general intelligence, even if they won't say so officially.

The model launched Thursday to a limited set of organizations in OpenAI's Daybreak Access program, with availability expanding "in the coming days" to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers, plus developers using the API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock.

What Astra actually does

OpenAI calls Astra "the world's best computer use model," designed to navigate software the way a person does — clicking through browsers, filling out spreadsheets, building presentations and carrying out multistep tasks start to finish rather than just explaining how. The company says it posts state-of-the-art results on benchmarks covering software engineering, cybersecurity, scientific reasoning and general office work, according to details compiled from the launch materials.

The rollout itself was messy: OpenAI's own Astra landing page was briefly pulled offline and a blog post disappeared and reappeared before the company's announcement was finalized, leading to a confusing few hours where outlets weren't sure whether the launch was official.
